Women’s FA Cup Final: Man United v Chelsea
The two FA Cup semi finals have been played and the teams lining up at Wembley on May 14th have been decided. This is how the semi finalists booked their place in the Women’s FA Cup Final in two enthralling games:
Manchester United vs Brighton and Hove Albion
Manchester United booked their first FA Cup Final after overcoming a Brighton team who were in no mood to make up the numbers in the semi-final clash at leigh Sport Village. An uncharachteristic error from Mary Earps gave Brighton a surprise leas on 36 minutes, setting up a game that would be tightly fought out.
Many had predicted that this title-chasing Manchester United team would be too strong for Brighton and Hove Albion but the Seagulls showed that they had deserved their place in the semis and ended up being agonisingly close to booking a trip to Wembley.
Leah Galton continued her impressive form this season to pull United back level before Alessia Russo put them ahead. BHA sub Danielle Carter knows what it feels like to lift the FA Cup, having done so four times for Arsenal, and she kept the dream alive when she capitalised as Millie Turner dwelled on the ball, winning possession and tucking the ball away to make it all square at 75 minutes.
There were a few surprised reactions when Marc Skinner decided to bring a 34 year old Rachel Williams into his squad but his reasons were fully justified when she used all of her experience to keep a composed head and score the winner on the 88th minute.
Aston Villa vs Chelsea
Aston Villa will be very disappointed that they didn’t take one of their many chances in this end-to-end game. Although Chelsea started strongly with Lauren James going close several times and Jankovic hitting the woodwork, as the game went on, Villa started to carve out chances.
If there was one player you would predict to be the difference between these two teams, your money would probably be on Sam Kerr and she lived up to the hype once again. The type of player who can have a quiet game but when she gets half a chance, she makes sure the back of the net ripples, Kerr gave Hannah Hampton no chance with her clinical, close-range header.
A frustrating game for a dogged Aston Villa team who look like they are on course to disrupt the top four and on another day they could have scored two or three. It wasn’t to be and current holders Chelsea now have their eyes on a potential 5th FA Cup.
