Casey Stoney Sacked by San Diego Wave

Casey Stoney sacked by NWSL team San Diego Wave.

Breaking news today as San Diego Wave announced that they have parted company with manager Casey Stoney.

A shock to some, Stoney’s San Diego Wave team had failed to pick up a win in their last seven games. While this campaign hadn’t gone as well as expected, Stoney led the club to their first NWSL Shield in 2023. Sitting 9th in the league, the club decided that it was time for a change.

Given Casey’s great track record, many believed that she would be granted more time to turn the results around. President Jill Ellis thanked Stoney for her time at the club: “We are immensely grateful to Casey for her commitment to our club and the positive impact she had both on and off the pitch.”

Where next for Casey Stoney?

Former Lioness Stoney enjoyed a successful spell in charge at Manchester United Women before heading to the NWSL. She may be interested in a move back to the WSL, with several clubs currently looking for managers. Carla Ward departed Aston Villa this summer, while Leicester City and Brighton also have vacant managerial positions.

Manchester United fans were quick to ask her to return on social media but Marc Skinner recently signed a new contract and Jim Ratcliffe was quoted this week as focusing on the ‘first team’ referring to the men’s team.
