Man City dump Arsenal out of Women’s FA Cup

14-time Women’s FA Cup winners Arsenal won’t be adding to their record FA Cup haul this season. Manchester City dumped Arsenal out of the FA Cup in a closely contested match at Meadow Park. Manchester City goalkeeper Keating had a day to forget last time she visited Meadow Park but she was outstanding this time around. Sarina Wiegman was in attendance and will have been delighted to see the England goalkeeper’s performance, pulling off a string of saves to thwart Arsenal.

Following a shock defeat in the WSL to West Ham last weekend, Arsenal were desperate to get their season back on track. However, they were unable to create many chances. The few chances they did carve out were dealt with by Keating. WSL leading goalscorer Khadija Shaw was a constant threat for City and Arsenal would have been relieved to see her withdrawn in the second half. Worryingly for City, Shaw immediately applied ice onto her leg.

Manchester City capitalise on Arsenal defensive error

The breakthrough came when City fired a freekick into the penalty area and Catley was unable to clear the ball away, leaving Aleixandri with a simple tap-in. Arsenal kept knocking on the door to push for an equaliser but time ran out for the home team.

There were a few controversial moments in the game, including a penalty claim for City when there was a collision between Wubben-Moy and Shaw, with a possible elbow to the striker’s face. Arsenal players also claimed the ball had gone over the line in a goalmouth scramble, with Keating grabbing the ball while looking to be behind the goal line.

Arsenal are out of the FA Cup

Manchester City go into the draw for the next round of the FA Cup, while Arsenal now only have the WSL and Conti Cup to aim for.
