Bonmati, Earps and Wiegman Win FIFA Best Awards

Aitana Bonmati, Mary Earps and Sarina Wiegman take the top awards at the FIFA Best awards ceremony in London.

After leading Barcelona to a treble, including the Women’s Champions League and helping her national side Spain to win the World Cup, there was no player more deserving to win the Best FIFA Women’s Player of the Year. Bonmati recently collected the Ballon d’Or and was clear favourite to add this trophy to her cabinet.

Voting points

Aitana Bonmati – 52

Linda Caicedo – 40

Jenni Hermoso 36

Mary Earps Claims Another Trophy

England goalkeeper Mary Earps became the first goalkeeper to win the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award. Earps played an integral part in England’s World Cup campaign, with some outstanding performances along the way to the final. She also helped her club side Manchester United qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

Sarina Wiegman picked up the Best Women’s Coach for a remarkable fourth time. She previously won the award twice while managing the Netherlands, as well as in 2022 after leading the Lionesses to victory in the Euros.

FIFPRO Women’s World 11

Despite Hermoso and Caicedo being voted in the top 3 for the best player award, neither made it into the Women’s World 11. Alex Morgan’s inclusion, along with the lack of Spain players, was a key discussion point for fans and pundits after the team was revealed.

The 3-3-4 formation for the team was another surprise choice, and many people took to social media to question why there were so many England players, when it was Spain that won the World Cup and numerous Spain players won the Champions League with Barcelona.
