Manchester United Women Draw With PSG Women

Manchester United claim a 1 – 1 draw in their first ever Women’s Champions League match.

Manchester United have been waiting a long time to join their rivals at the top table in Europe’s most prestigious competition – the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The journey since reforming in 2018 has seen the team promoted from the FA Women’s Championship to secure their place in the WSL. In the 2022/23 WSL season they pushed Chelsea all the way in the WSL title race, earning a place in Round 2 of the UWCL for their 2nd place spot in the WSL.

Manchester United will have been disappointed to be drawn against a team as strong as PSG in the early rounds of the UWCL, with the UWCL format coming under increasing scrutiny as the women’s game has progressed rapidly in specific leagues, including the WSL.

Manchester United v PSG Team News

Skinner made a number of team changes following the 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Friday. Riviere and Naalsund were brought into the starting XI in the place of Ladd and da Silva Ferreira.

Manchester United had to withstand a lot of pressure from PSG in the first half, with Mary Earps being called into action, as well as a goal-line clearance from Millie Turner in the opening seconds of the game.

United looked under siege until an injury to PSG’s Baltimore stopped play at United were able to re-organise. Garcia could have given Manchester United a shock lead when a misplaced backpass fell into her path, only to be saved by PIcaud.

At half-time neither team had broken the deadlock, and Skinner shuffled his pack by bringing on Geyse for Riviere, a change that almost paid off immediately but she was unable to hit the target with her shot.

PSG took the lead through a composed finish from Chawinga but United continued to test their visitors. United went close from a corner before Malard and Miyazawa took to the field. It was Lyon loanee Malard who claimed Manchester United’s first ever goal in the Women’s Champions League.

United were dangerous from a corner again, as Turner met the ball first, heading it towards Malard who was able to divert her header into the back of the net. United have it all to play for in the second leg in Paris and have shown that they can be a threat in Europe as well as the WSL.
