Barcelona win the Women’s Champions League

Barcelona win the Women’s Champions League again after a masterclass against Lyon.

Barcelona Women finally got the better of Lyon with a 2-0 win over their nemesis team. Having lost to Lyon in previous Champions League campaigns, Barcelona proved that they are now Europe’s top team. Goals from Ballon d’Or winners Bonmati and Putellas helped Barcelona get their hands on the Champions League trophy for a third time.

The Blaugrana dominated play but only Bonmati’s 63rd minute goal separated the team, setting the scene for a nervy end to the match. Up stepped Alexia Putellas, who had only been introduced on the 90 minute mark. Back to her pre-ACL injury best, Putellas only needed six minutes on the pitch to grab the goal that secured Europe’s most coveted trophy.

With the match held in Bilbao, it was no surprise that the San Mames Stadium was packed with Barca fans. Putellas stroked the ball into the net to send the Spanish sections of the crowd into raptures of ecstacy. Fresh from signing her new contract with the club, Putellas showed why she is ready to claim back her crown. La Reina tore off her shirt and swung it wildly around her head in celebration as Lyon players crumpled with the realisation that the trophy was going back to Barcelona for a second consecutive year.

The match turned out to be Lyon manager Sonia Bompastor’s last game in charge at the club, as she has agreed to take over the managerial reigns at Chelsea. She replaces outgoing manager Emma Hayes who has taken up the USWNT coach role.
