Chelsea Hit 8 Past Bristol City to Boost WSL Title Hopes

Chelsea Women 8 – 0 Bristol City. Chelsea in dramatic goal deficit recovery to take the WSL title race to the wire.

Emma Hayes may have verbally conceded the WSL title following her team’s loss to Liverpool last week but if she was playing mind games, they certainly worked.

Manchester City emerged as WSL title favourites following Chelsea’s shock defeat but this weekend the title race took another twist. On Sunday afternoon, Arsenal Women inflicted a huge title blow to Manchester City by beating them 2-1, with two late goals from Stina Blackstenius.

However, with Chelsea’s goal difference trailing City’s by 6 goals going into Sunday’s matches, Chelsea needed to pull off a huge goal haul to put themselves back in the WSL driving seat. A Guro Reiten inspired Chelsea had clearly read the script. They went into the break 2-0 up but went on to fire another 6 past relegated Bristol City in the second half.

Guro Reiten Hits Four in Goal Fest

Reiten grabbed four goals, rounding off a stunning individual performance. Beever-Jones weighed in with a brace, with Nuskin and Charles also getting on the scoresheet.

At full-time Emma Hayes triumphantly addressed the crowd to tell them the title race is certainly not over. The 8-0 win ensures that the WSL title race is going to be an exciting climax to the season and Hayes may just claim that last WSL trophy before departing to the US.

Chelsea face two tricky away fixtures – a derby day against Tottenham followed by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Manchester City travel to Aston Villa on the final day of the season, a team who they have struggled to beat in recent seasons. What a finale to look forward to!
