Barcelona to Play Lyon in Champions League Final 2024
After overcoming Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final, Champions League holders Barcelona will play Lyon yet again in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final 2024.
Barcelona Women v Lyon Women is becoming a regular fixture in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final. For the third time in six years, Spanish giants Barcelona will take on 7-time Champions League winners Lyon. Barcelona trailed 1-0 to Chelsea after the first leg defeat at home but they turned the fixture around with a 2-0 win at a sold-out Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes had plenty to say about the officiating after the game, going as far as to say it was “probably the worst decisions in UEFA Women’s Champions League history”. Chelsea’s Champions League exit denied the dream finish to Hayes’ tenure, as the Champions League is the only trophy to elude her. Hayes will take over the USWNT prior to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Goals from Bonmati and Rolfo, plus a dubious sending off for Buchanan, were enough for Barcelona to claim another place in the Champions League final. This will be Barcelona’s fifth Champions League final appearance in six years, having lost in 2019 and 2022 to Lyon. Their two Champions League final victories came against Chelsea (4-0 in 2021) and Vfl Wolfsburg (3-2 in 2023).
Lyon Beat PSG to Claim Barcelona Rematch
Lyon missed out on a place in the final last season but they made sure they were on the plane to the final this year. A resounding 6-2 aggregate win over two legs against Benfica was followed by a 5-3 aggregate win over PSG to book another date with destiny.
