Women’s Football Weekend Preview

March 23 and 24 is known as Women’s Football Weekend in England. With no Premier League matched scheduled due to the international break, there are extra WSL matches on TV this weekend, with some crackers including the Manchester derby.

Here’s a preview to all the WSL matches over Women’s Football Weekend:

Manchester City Women v Manchester United Women

Saturday 23 March – Kick off 12:30

Manchester City currently sit joint top of the WSL table with Chelsea and a win against their Manchester rivals United will give some extra confidence going into the season run-in. Khadija Shaw has been in phenomenal scoring form this season, with a haul of 16 goals from 15 games. Following Alessia Russo’s exit to Arsenal, United have struggled for goals and given that City’s defence has been the hardest to beat in the WSL this season, United could find it difficult to break City down.

Everton Women v Liverpool Women

Sunday 24 March – Kick off 13:00

The Merseyside derby takes place at Goodison Park and Liverpool will be looking to avenge their 1-0 loss in the WSL back in October. Since then, Liverpool have emerged as a force to be reckoned with, climbing the WSL table to currently sit in 5th place. Everton come into the match on the back of a disappointing loss to Aston Villa and will be hoping that a win against their neighbours will give the fans something to cheer for at Goodison.

Bristol City Women v Tottenham Hotspur Women

Sunday 24 March – Kick off 14:00

Bottom-placed Bristol City have experienced a difficult time since returning to the WSL. With just 1 win from 16, they are favourites to go down at the end of the season and Tottenham Hotspur won’t be sparing any mercy. Spurs have enjoyed a mixed season, beating Arsenal in December was a high point but there has been no consistency. Nevertheless, they should expect to take all three points away with them in this encounter.

Leicester City Women v Brighton Women

Sunday 24 March – Kick off 15:00

Leicester City have been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently with manager Willie Kirk currently being investigated for an alleged player relationship. Just two points separate Leicester City and Brighton, as neither team has had much to celebrate this season. It could be a very tightly fought contest between the teams lying in 8th and 10th place.

West Ham Women v Chelsea Women

Sunday 24 March – Kick off 16:30

This all-London fixture sees top of the table Chelsea take on relegation candidates West Ham. West Ham have had a really disappointing season, shipping in 33 goals in 16 games. However, West Ham do have a knack of taking points off the top teams, having beaten Arsenal and drawing with Manchester United earlier in the season. Emma Hayes’ farewell tour is looking like it could end in plenty of silverware to add to her collection, despite the team missing star players such as Sam Kerr and Millie Bright.

Aston Villa Women v Arsenal Women

Sunday 24 March – Kick off 18:45

Arsenal are going to need a great deal of help if they are going to catch Chelsea and Manchester City. Having dropped unnecessary points throughout the season, they are 6 points adrift in third place. Aston Villa had a poor start to the season but have moved through the gears recently and could put a further dent in Arsenal’s WSL title hopes. Jordan Nobbs will have the extra motivation of playing against her former club, while Adriana Leon will be full of confidence following her Golden Boot win at the Gold Cup.
