Women Footballers in Ibiza: Why the Obsession with Ibiza?

After a gruelling season with few days off and not many opportunities to take a sunshine break, the majority of footballers pack their suitcases and jump on a plane soon after the final whistle blows. For years, most women footballers would be happy finding a sunny destination for a week or two of recharging the batteries, chilling by the pool and trying the local restaurants, without worrying about their nutrition plan or making sure they hit the right amount of sleep hours.

In more recent years, there is one destination that has become popular with female footballers – the White Island, otherwise known as Ibiza. The Spanish footballers such as Alexia Putellas, Jenni Hermoso and many of their international teammates have been regulars in Ibiza for years, with Instagram photos showing them enjoying clubs like Ushuaia, top restaurants like STK and boat trips in the day time. With Ibiza being a very short flight from Barcelona, logistics make Ibiza the ideal holiday choice for the Barca players. But why are so many other women footballers choosing Ibiza?

Who has been spotted in Ibiza?

Last summer, after winning the Euro 2022 tournament, several of the victorious Lionesses were spotted celebrating in style. Pictures of Ella Toone, Leah Williamson, Nikita Parris and Ellie Roebuck emerged in the days following the final.

Alexia Putellas has also been back to Ibiza this summer with her group of friends and family members, with Mundo Deportivo publishing photos of them enjoying their time on the White Island.

Arsenal players Katie McCabe and Caitlin Foord were joined by former Arsenal teammate Jordan Nobbs for an early summer getaway in Ibiza, while Leah Williamson has been spotted in Ibiza with family members and England team mate Keira Walsh.

Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert was also seen partying with fellow footballer friends including her Scotland international team mates Lisa Evans, Rachel Corsie and Kirsty Hanson.

A quick scroll through Instagram will reveal countless more footballers from the WSL, Liga F and other European leagues all taking their summer break in Ibiza, many players will shortly be getting on another plane to Australia or New Zealand for the WWC which starts on 20 July 2023.

Why is Ibiza so popular with women’s footballers?

Aside from the possibility that Ballon d’Or winner is a holiday destination trendsetter, there are many reasons that players from other countries are heading to Ibiza every summer. The White Island has been popular with celebrities for decades, with the combination of sunshine and luxury accommodations, as well as amazing nightlife. With some of the top women’s footballers now earning a generous salary, luxury villas, VIP sections at the best clubs and a table at the most exclusive restaurants in Ibiza is no longer out of their reach. June is a great time to visit Ibiza, so it is no wonder why so many women footballers are in Ibiza this summer.
