United Close to Securing Champions League, Chelsea Hit 7 in WSL Title Run-in
A round up of this weekend’s Women’s Super League results and what they mean for Champions League qualification and the WSL title chase.
As the final day of the WSL season approaches, the fight for the WSL title and UWCL places continues to get tighter.
Manchester United Close to Champions League Qualification
Following this weekend’s results, Manchester United’s 3 – 0 win against Tottenham, combined with City’s shock defeat to Liverpool all-but guaranteed that they will be playing Champions League football for the first time ever.
Qualifying for the Champions League started off as a key target at the start of the 2022/23 WSL season but their impressive form has seen them disrupt the usual “top three” of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. Now Champions League qualification is a mere formality, they have their sights firmly set on the WSL title. Their win against Tottenham maintained their position at the top of the table, with Chelsea having two games in hand.
Who Will Qualify for UWCL from WSL?
With the first three places in the WSL qualifying for the UWCL, previous seasons have seen these coveted spots claimed by the trio of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. However, Arsenal have lost pace throughout the season, losing to United twice, as well as suffering defeats to City and Chelsea.
There is no margin for error in this league and Manchester City may have blown their UWCL qualification chances by losing to Liverpool. However, a win against Manchester United and provided that Arsenal lose to Chelsea, City could still claim the all-important third place to secure a place in the Champions League knockout phase.
The games between Manchester United v Manchester City, and Chelsea v Arsenal will have a significant impact on who will be lifting the WSL trophy and who will be playing in Europe next season.
Arsenal edged to a narrow 1-0 victory over Leicester City thanks to a Frida Maanum goal to stay in the race but the WSL title is almost out of their reach. However, Arsenal will have taken great comfort from Manchester City’s surprise defeat to Liverpool, which opens up the door for them to take that decisive third place.
