Preview to Women’s Football Weekend 2023
With the men’s Premier League having no fixtures this weekend due to the international football break, it is an opportunity for more fans to head down to their local women’s football matches or catch some of the action on TV.
Following the incredible success of the Lionesses last summer as they lifted the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 trophy at a sold out Wembley Stadium, there has been increased interest in women’s football in England and across the world.
Earlier in the season, the WSL attendance record was broken when 47,367 fans flocked to the Emirates to see Arsenal host North London rivals Tottenham, a fixture which saw Arsenal win 4-0 with goals from Beth Mead, Vivianne Miedema and Rafaelle Souza.
This weekend has some very exciting WSL fixtures to look forward to, including top of the table clashes, local derbies and fixtures at some of the biggest football stadiums in England. Buy tickets for fixtures at Old Trafford from just £3, Goodison tickets for £4 or Villa Park tickets from £5.
With the FIFA 2023 World Cup now only a few months away, players will have an added incentive to try and book a place on the plane to Australia and New Zealand.
A good performance this weekend could push players further up the pecking order, with Sarina Wiegman due to name her England squad for upcoming fixtures: England v Brazil on 6 April 2023 and England v Australia on 11 April. These are the last international matches scheduled before the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup gets started.
