Bayern Munich 1 – 0 Arsenal
Match report from the Women’s Champions League Bayern Munich v Arsenal.
Were Arsenal robbed? The Arsenal players, manager and fans definitely seemed to think so after a series of questionable decisions both before and during this match.
No goal line technology?
Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall could not help but show his frustration at the lack of goal line technology, with his team believing that the ball went over the line from a Blackstenius header before Saki Kumagai hooked it away. The more frustrating aspect of that decision for Arsenal is that the technology was available but the home team declined to use it, based on cost. The return leg at the Emirates will benefit from goal line technology but Arsenal will have to overturn a deficit that they perhaps would not be facing if officiating decisions had gone their way.
There were also calls from the Arsenal players for a back pass when a goalmouth scramble ended in the Bayern Munich goalkeeper picking up a ball that had been knocked back towards goal by her own player.
Penalty claims for Arsenal
There were also big claims for a penalty when Caitlin Foord’s strike hit the hand of Glodis Viggosdottir and another claim for a shirt pull on Rafaelle Souza that had the Arsenal manager remonstrating in disbelief. In his post-match interview, he questioned why VAR had not been used effectively in the game and this is surely an area that needs to be investigated.
It is a shame that the game seems to have been marred by complaints about technology, as the game itself was proof of the growing quality of the competition. The only goal of the game came from a clinical Lea Schuller header that the outstretched Zinsberger couldn’t get her hand to.
Arsenal will be fired up for the return leg and a big home crowd (and all the available technology!) at the Emirates Stadium could give them a major boost and see them progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2012/13 season. Before the second leg in the Champions League, Arsenal take on their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur – match and ticket information for Tottenham Hotspur v Arsenal.
